About Conservation Through Art

As an artist, my inspiration lies in a creative space where environmentalism, ecology, fine art and surfing subculture intersect. My relationship with the natural environment is not based purely on any kind of Eurocentric romanticism, it is more to do with a deeply felt ecocentric connection with nature that has grown through my life as a surfer – being intimately connected with natural processes such as tidal flux, cosmic and lunar phenomena, weather and wind patterns, and oceanic energy. This ‘spiritual’ connection with natural places has been supplemented by the study of ecology/earth science at university level, which facilitated a real scientific fascination for natural phenomenon and the visual experience of that phenomena, particularly when aspects of the landscape and nature are viewed in close proximity. Themes such as bio-turbation, water and wind erosion, coastal geo-morphology, inter-tidal zone ecology, ecological succession, ecological niche formation, survival, growth and decay in nature – and how the passing of time affects these things – often reoccur in my work.
